Choosing Between Invisalign and At-Home Aligners

There has been an ongoing debate on the differences between Invisalign and at-home aligners. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages and it is important that you understand the differences before making a decision. There is no reason why you shouldn’t be considering Invisalign in Philadelphia, it is one of the most forward advancements in orthodontics when it comes to restoring a  smile.

The invisible aligners were designed to replace metal braces which are conspicuous and sometimes uncomfortable for some people. Modern custom-braces have been around since the turn of the new millennium, however, Invisalign has continued to grow in popularity.

Let’s take a look at both options to get a better understanding of the differences between these different options.

Invisalign: This is a treatment option that involves transparent and retainer aligners to put the teeth into place. The aligners are worn for not more than 22 hours a day and are supposed to be replaced after every two weeks. This treatment can take up to a year. The Invisalign process always begins with a consultation to determine if this orthodontic treatment is the right option for you.

Clear Braces: They are also known as ceramic braces since they’re made from ceramic materials. The ceramic material can be made to match the color of your teeth. The application is the same with metal braces when it comes functionality. The brackets are bonded to the teeth and then connected by an archwire.

Home Aligners:  Home aligners are less expensive alternatives to align teeth. While the price may be a benefit when compared to other treatment options, we never recommend this given the unsupervised nature of the treatment. Patients are required to take pictures of their teeth, and wait for the aligners to arrive via mail. There is always the possibility they might not be the right fit and there can be complications right from the start. A procedure like this requires a visit to the dentist’s office for the best outcome.

Here are some of the reasons (based on our experiences) why you should consider Invisalign treatment vs. the other treatment options.

It is More Transparent

One of the greatest benefits of Invisalign treatment is its virtual transparency. It will be hard for someone to notice you’re wearing Invisalign as they are virtually “invisible”. This is always a well received benefit, especially for older patients who are seeking tooth alignment but do not want a mouth full of visible braces.

It can Easily be Removed

A disadvantage of using ceramic or home remedies is that it can make brushing and flossing a big challenge. Invisalign can easily be removed when you want to brush or eat. This ensures that your mouth is healthy throughout the process. This is extremely important.

It can Treat More Extensive Cases

Invisalign has been developed to treat a wide variety of cases as long as they’re not too severe. Such cases include crooked teeth, gapped teeth, as well as an overbite/underbite.

Invisalign is also a great option for someone who wants to correct the shape of their teeth without being obvious.
